Orford is a town that has something for everyone, whether you have a preference for walking, sailing, bird watching, cycling or history. Visitors can climb the staircases and explore the floors, rooms, and passages from the basement to the turrets on roof of Orford Castle. From here, you can enjoy the magnificent views over the town and heaths, and across the sea towards Orford Ness.
Accessed by ferry boat from Orford Quay, Orford Ness is a wide and very long shingle spit at the mouth of the River Ore. A nature reserve, and now run by the National Trust, it has in the past been used both as a airstrip testing facility and in the 1970’s, was the site of a powerful radar station.
Havergate Island, again, reached by ferry, is famous for avocets and terns during the spring, and in the autumn and winter, is a haven for ducks and wading birds. (Pre-booking with RSPB Minsmere is essential).
A wander around the village will let you discover the Pump Street Bakery, Pinneys Smokehouse, The Jolly Sailor, The Kings Head and The Crown and Castle
